A Mitzvah is really two events running at once. There is the service — formal, quiet, watched by grandparents who have waited years for it. And there is the party afterwards, which is loud, fast, and largely populated by thirteen-year-olds who do not care that anyone is photographing them. Both deserve covering properly, and they demand completely different instincts.
At the service I work long and unobtrusively, respecting whatever the synagogue asks. At the party I get in close — the hora, the candle lighting, the dance floor at full tilt, and the parents watching from the edge of the room. That last frame is usually the one the family keeps.
